Established in 1984, Design Issues is the first international academic journal to explore the history, theory, and criticism of design.

This cover design honors BIPOC-led grassroots work to restore and reclaim land ownership and food sovereignty. Woven into the earth is text from a speech by W. E. B. Du Bois, titled “Behold the Land,” calling to the workers above to return to working with the earth, while the hands speak to the deep, reciprocal connection between land and body.

The design is rooted in historical research of __ , with imagery sourced from the Library of Congress. I used the “DuBois” typeface, created by a Vocal Type Co., based on lettering from Du Bois’ original visualizations.
